Clinical Lab Assistant

Work Location: Wright Patterson AFB, OH

Cape Fox is seeking a highly qualified professional to join our team in support of a government customer. This position is contingent upon award.

Core Duties:

• Follow all PHE documents and forms
• Receive and process medical shipment boxes from various agencies
• Track errors/discrepancies with IATA shipping regulations
• All boxes received must be processed daily unless otherwise directed by PHE leadership
• Process, verify, accession in CHCS, and re-label medical specimens from various agencies. All specimens received must be processed daily, excluding Federal holidays that FedEx doesn’t deliver (refer to FedEx Holiday Delivery Schedule available at www.fedex.com), unless otherwise directed by PHE leadership
• Must document condition that specimens are received; frozen, refrigerated, or room temperature
• Stability of specimens must be monitored and evaluated according to PHE procedures
• Frozen specimens require additional time for thawing and drying prior to processing
• Specimens will be sorted upon arrival by sample type for priority of specimen processing and identifying short stability specimens according to PHE procedures and unless otherwise directed by PHE leadership
• Enter specimen and patient data into the USAFSAM/PHE Laboratory Information System. Errors in the entering of this data can have serious impacts, and so generally result in the creation of an Incident Report by the Government. The Contractor is required to address any Incident Reports in the ensuing Monthly Status Report
• Deliver specimens to the appropriate sections of the laboratory
• Processes specimens being sent to outside reference laboratories
• Perform all tasks using appropriate techniques to assure specimen integrity and positive identification throughout the laboratory processes
• Receive, process, and ship shipping supply orders to customers as needed
• Prepare and ship boxes back to customers
• Receives, processes, and stores shipments and specimens as directed by the program manager/lead laboratory specimen processor during base closures to ensure specimen stability is not affected
• Prepares samples for analysis by aliquoting, plating cultures, and other similar tasks
• Accomplish other laboratory tasks as directed by the Laboratory Manager
• Prepares samples for analysis by aliquoting, plating cultures, and other similar tasks
• Handles discrepant samples, performs patient DEERS checks, manually orders tests (when applicable), contact customers regarding specimen issues, and enters discrepant specimen information into the Discrepancy Database
• Receive calls from customers and resolves issues related to specimen processing
• Log all incoming customer calls
• Sends out correspondence to customers via email and/or phone as directed by PHE leadership
• Explains Lab Guide and current PHE specimen policies to customers
• Provides training to customers in-person or online on shipment protocols for PHE specimens

Requirements:

• Possess an Associate’s degree in a medical or science field or possess equivalent job experience
• Ability to type at least 30 words per minute, and possess basic knowledge of medical terminology
• Possess at least one (1) year experience handling and accessioning medical laboratory specimens
• At least one (1) year experience in Customer Service (experience must be in a medical laboratory or health care facility) to include answering phones, recording/documenting messages, coordinating with administration to resolve issues, and troubleshoot concerns and complaints
• Highly desired: Undergraduate level course(s) in medical terminology or a biological science. An associate degree in clinical lab technology, clinical laboratory assistant certificate program, or equivalent experience. A certification as a medical lab assistant by ASCP/AMT or equivalent.
• Have a signed Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) in place with their company based on the potential access to confidential, proprietary, and/or sensitive information. The NDA shall be provided to the Government Program Manager by start of performance
• Must be able to pass a Tier 1 Background Investigation
